The so-called magical AJL

I think AJL is one of the most anticipated yearly events that many look forward to. Unfortunately, when they announced the Juara last night, I felt that the magic (the theme for the 22nd AJL) was lost! I am not talking about performance wise, I'm talking about the song, the lyrics and the composition of the song. I am no expert, but I am neither dumb nor deaf. I think they were so much carried over by the theme of magic that they wanted to even make the result very much "surprising" to us.

Whenever I heard Itu Kamu I would quickly be reminded of Sheila On 7's Itu Aku. Maybe because the phrase Itu Kamu is the tagline for Estranged's song while Itu Aku is for SO7's. When I read the lyrics of Itu Kamu, I don't find it amusing, I think it's just a plain love song. I don't hate Estranged, I do enjoy the song, it's just that I think there were many other songs which have better lyrics and music in comparison to Itu Kamu. Samudera for example, the lyrics has more meaning to it than Itu Kamu. Oklah, if you still want a love song to win, I think Kasih Tercipta has the better lyrics. (tinker can assure you that I am anti-Faisal Tahir hahahaha)

Itu Kamu is a radio-friendly, easy-listening song, but to win such a prestigious award like AJL, hmmm...dunno-lah what to say. When you crowned that song as the 'song-of-the-year' (among the songs that competed in Juara Lagu), you are basically denying the existence of other better songs. It also suggests that the trend now is that you don't have to produce lyrics that has aesthetic values (my personal opinion of Itu Kamu) to bag the AJL award. You can simply write a piece which you consider as a bonus-track for your CD and play it frequent enough on air and then go back home with the AJL trophy.

In conclusion, AJL has managed to use the theme of magic to make me disbelieve in their magical abilities and doubt their so-called prestigious ceremony...
