Updates

I've been busy watching the Olympic games that I didn't have much time to blog about other things. Herm, so here's a few updates.

I was told by my lecturer that there's a guy (well, he's actually a "softlan") who was not allowed to attend the convo because he had some serious problems with the university's student affairs unit regarding his "sexual" affairs inside and outside the university...erk, scary lah!! This guy ah, he really looks like a girl, if you see him walking around the campus, you might mistaken him for a girl...but, all girls in my univ have to wear either tudung or headscarf...so, this one is definitely a guy.

Attended a talk by Shirley Lim on Monday. She's one funny lady. She's been living in America for almost 30 years or so, but she didn't sound "American" at all. We had some discussion on Joss and Gold. I think the most important point that tickled my brain to do some thinking was when Prof. Lim was asked about her female characters, "why do you portray the female characters to be stronger than the males?" She told us that the female character might APPEAR as strong, but actually they are not. In any circumstances, they will always be the ones being oppressed or victimised by the surroundings. E.g. Li An (in the first book) is potrayed as a young, bold lady, thinks differently from other girls, towards the end of the book, she commits perhaps the biggest mistake in her life - she sleeps with Chester and after that he went back to America. Later on, she gives birth to Suyin, and divorced by Henry, her husband, because Suyin has green eyes and brown hair (again she's the "victim" although she appears to be strong). There are many other occurences in the book that indicate the indirect oppresion against women...at one glance, I really thought Li An and Allen are strong women...but in reality, they appear to be strong because the surroundings force them to be so. But if you look closely, you'll see they're actually the victims.
I had a good time listening to the mouse that roars - that was her nickname when she was young - it'd be great if we had more time...
