Do you that before the Aryans came, the Dravidians were ruling India. According to the Dravidian ancient literature, they believed that (to a certain extent) men and women are equal. But with the arrival of the Aryans everything changes. In the literature, it was told that there were two goddesses who has contributed a lot in the battle against the "king" of devils - Mahesa and another one, I can't remember the name. When all gods has failed, the three main gods - Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma* (*not sure whether Brahma was included - sorry, I'm don't really know the details, just the general idea of it) generated and combined their power and from this the goddess Durga was born. She defeated Mahesa. Many many years after that another form of strong devil appear to the scene. Again the gods were defeated, and Durga was summoned upon. In the battle field Durga transformed into her dark form and this form is known to many as goddess Kali. When the Aryans came, they have a different structure of society which was segregated according to your caste. The Brahmins in particular were and still are very sensitive in this caste system, they couldn not mingle with people from different caste because the purity will be "polluted". If there's a pregnant woman in the Brahmins' family who is about to give birt, she'll be carried to the cowshed because the process of giving birth is believed to be one of the many sources of impurity to the Brahmins. According to Prof. Q this led to the discrimination of women in the society. There are 3 main civilisation in Asian - Egyptian, Indian and some say Chinese civilisation. This Indian civilisation had given a huge impact to the world, thus, the way the Brahmins treat women in their society in some ways had contributed to the discrimination towards women in the larger scale. In India there's a feminist organisation which fights for women's rights and if I'm not mistaken the organisation name is taken from the name of goddess Kali. Hah, now what do you think bout this? Even the ancient people (the Dravidians) respected women and look higly upon them - hehehe.
