We dropped by Uncle Habib's restaurant, Bilal, and had our late lunch there (it should have been a hi-tea). I ordered roti telur and roti planta (you know how small they make roti telur and roti canai these days, you need to order more than one - good business strategy huh - also a good excuse for me to add some pounds to my already not-so-thin frame).
My dad and lil bro were having nasi briyani and mom had roti canai.
When the ane put a plate of steaming-hot roti telur in front of me, I was surprised to see the size of it. It's twice as big as the normal roti telur that you get from the typical-kedai-mamak-yang-banyak-franchise. I realised that I was in deep trouble. Usually, roti planta is slightly bigger, wider than roti telur...macam mana nak makan semua ni! Maka benarlah kata orang tua-tua di zaman teknologi maklumat yang ada multimedia super corridor tu; orang tamak selalu terlebih kenyang macam ular sawa hehehe.
The best thing about Bilal's roti telur is the sliced onions that they put inside the roti. Dulu, zaman aku hidung-masih-bercendol (i.e. budak hingusan), many kedai mamak and kedai melayu served roti telur with bawang. Now, zaman anak sedara aku hidung-masih-bercendol, it's a rare thing! Unless you give a specific order for roti telur bawang.
Tapi, kadang-kadang, specific order can also backfire you. When I went to Sabah early this year, at one of the many restaurants, tink3r and I ordered kuey teow goreng basah, and after waiting for more than 20 mins, the waitress came back with two plates of cantonese style kuey teow. Instead of the sweet-salty taste of soy sauce that we were craving for, they forced us to eat the corn flour that they use to thicken the garlic/black pepper/eggy gravy. Another 'backfiring' incident which also took place in Sabah occured when I ordered roti telur bawang. The guy brought two plates for my order, one was roti telur, and the other was roti bawang. Fyi, I can't eat bawang on its own...or in a roti without the egg!
Hence, people, if you would like to have a delicious roti with telur and bawang in it, go and get it from Bilal Restaurant in K.L. And if you would like to have the normal Semenanjung kuey teow goreng in Sabah, ask for kuey teow goreng kering. My Sabahan friend, Chomeyl, has confirmed that kuey teow goreng basah in Sabah is the Semenanjung Cantonese style or Ladna (or is it Lakna?entahla) Imagine her backfiring incident in Semenanjung pulak.
I love being a Malaysian...being part of the masyarakat majmuk! Hehehehe...
Selamat makan tengahari!
