I saw you last night
Crawling out under the moonlight
You've been hiding there for a while
It's about time you turn back
I saw you last week
Your white shirt tainted red
Your heart bled
And more tears you shed
I saw you last month
Crying and running away
from your ruined life
Leaving the palace where you were once the princess
I saw you last year
You were jaunty
Your laugh froze the world
People admired and loved you
I wonder how your world turned black
I'm always here, watching you
Sharing your sorrow and delight
Have you no heart
that you didn't even turn your head!!
I wrote this poem some time ago. I asked a friend's opinion on it. She read it 2-3 times and then looked at me and asked, "Are you gay?". Was quite shocked with her question, "NO!! of course lah I'm straight!!" She said the persona is providing some emotional hints - a feeling of love towards the girl in the poem. Aiyak, susah dapat kawan yang terlalu analytical nih! The problem was she's looking at the persona and relating the persona to the "poet" i.e. me lah! Hey, Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 was also directed to his male patron in the court lah (not many are aware of this), but nobody accused him to be homosexual!
I guess I did the same mistake yesterday - relating the persona to the author. Was asked about my opinion on a fiction (in progress), read it and concluded that the author is projecting herself, her emotions, her experiences through the main character. That's the stupidest conclusion I've ever made! (apart from accusing Walt Whitman as a homo, and having a big "fight" with my English lit. lecturer, Dr.Jalal, on the issue). Erm, I guess I'm sorry for not seeing the projection/resemblance as a part of characterization and characteristic development process (of the protagonist). Will bear it in mind, it's just a FICTION!! - Madam, sorry ah ^__^ !
- I am no poet, and I can't write good poems, that's the reason why the poems are kept in a huge box under my bed. Eih, sounds like stalker lah the persona in this poem, but not me ah, NOT ME!! I didn't realise it when I wrote it hehehe.
